This is usually an emergency procedure in patients with acute appendicitis or rarely, an elective procedure in people with chronic/ recurrent appendicitis or after resolution of complicated acute appendicitis with abscess. Such patients present with sudden onset of severe upper/ right lower abdomen pain with vomiting at times.

The surgery is indicated to prevent complications of the disease- perforation/ abscess formation/ peritonitis. The surgery is usually done with standard 3 ports/ cuts. Again, there exists a small percentage of open conversion, risk of bleeding, adjacent organ injury, or postoperative infective complications.
